Mindfulness in Motion — The Stillness Some Minds Find While Moving

We’ve accidentally turned mindfulness into a posture. Sitting still. Eyes closed. “Clear your mind.” Focus on the breath. Don’t move. Don’t itch. Don’t fidget. If your thoughts race, you’re “doing it wrong.”

For some people, that works beautifully. For others, it’s almost impossible. And not because they’re undisciplined — but because their nervous system is wired differently. That’s where the idea of mindfulness in motion becomes more than a trendy phrase. It becomes a genuine doorway into presence.

Mindfulness isn’t stillness. It’s attention.

At its core, mindfulness is not about being calm. It’s about being aware. Noticing where your attention goes. Noticing sensations. Noticing thoughts without automatically obeying them. Returning — gently, repeatedly — to what’s happening right now.

That definition doesn’t require a chair. It requires an anchor. And for many people, the most reliable anchor isn’t silence. It’s movement.

Neurodiversity changes the entry point

When we talk about neurodiversity, we’re acknowledging that brains differ in how they regulate attention, stimulation, emotions, and impulse control. ADHD is one clear example, but it’s not the only one. For some neurodivergent people (and honestly, plenty of neurotypical ones too), sitting still isn’t relaxing — it’s activating.

The body feels loaded with energy. The mind becomes louder, not quieter. The moment you remove external structure, your attention scatters. This isn’t a “motivation problem.” It’s often a regulation problem. There’s research and clinical discussion suggesting that mindfulness training can help with ADHD-related challenges, but that how it’s implemented matters — and individual characteristics influence what works.

In other words: forcing stillness as the only “real” mindfulness practice can unintentionally exclude the people who might benefit most.

Why movement can create stillness

Here’s the paradox: For high-activation minds, movement can create the quiet that stillness cannot.

Because movement provides:

Sensory input (grounding attention in the body)
Rhythm (which reduces cognitive noise)
A single task constraint (narrowing the field of attention)

Mindful movement has been discussed as a route into mindfulness for people who would struggle to sit still, with the idea that movement and mindfulness may engage overlapping brain systems and can even work synergistically.

Or more simply: some minds need a steering wheel before they can find calm.

Sport as a mindfulness practice (when you do it differently)

This is where sport becomes more than training. If you’ve ever seen an athlete settle into a steady run, a swim set, a long ride — you’ve witnessed something close to meditation. Not because nothing hurts. Not because thoughts vanish. But because attention becomes simple.

Breath.
Cadence.
Posture.
Contact with the ground.
The sound of water.
The rhythm of effort.

This is mindfulness in motion: not thinking less as an achievement, but thinking cleaner as a byproduct. And yes — some people experience moments of near “blank mind” precisely because their attention is fully occupied by the present-moment demands of coordination and rhythm.

“Meditation in motion” is not just a metaphor

Some practices are explicitly framed this way. Tai chi, for example, is often described as a moving meditation, and Harvard Health has referred to it as “meditation in motion.” Mindful walking is also widely taught as a legitimate mindfulness practice: the point isn’t getting somewhere, it’s bringing full awareness to the experience of walking.

We also have broader evidence that combining physical activity with mindfulness can improve mental health and wellbeing, sometimes more than either approach alone. So when someone says, “I only find mindfulness when I move,” they’re not making excuses. They’re describing a valid pathway.

What about ADHD and movement specifically?

This matters in coaching. Because if an athlete has an ADHD profile — or simply a high-activation temperament — they may struggle with classic mindfulness scripts (“sit, breathe, observe thoughts”) and assume mindfulness just “isn’t for them.” But movement can improve performance on attention-demanding tasks for children with ADHD, and research coverage highlights that movement can support attention by increasing blood flow and engagement of relevant brain areas.

The takeaway for sport psychology is practical: If stillness escalates restlessness, use motion as the container for awareness.

How I apply this in coaching

When athletes hear “mindfulness,” many think they’re being asked to become calm, soft, or passive. That’s not what I train. I train presence under load. So with athletes — especially those who struggle to sit still — I use mindful movement as an applied skill:

1) One anchor, not five: Pick one focus point: breath rhythm, foot strike, stroke count, cadence, or body scanning.

2) Short windows, not long sessions: Start with 3–5 minutes inside a run or warm-up, not 20 minutes seated.

3) “Notice and return” as the whole practice: The win isn’t a blank mind. The win is catching the drift sooner and returning without frustration.

4) Use intensity intentionally: Sometimes a very easy pace is harder to stay present with for high-activation minds. A moderate, steady effort can actually make mindfulness easier because it gives the brain enough stimulation to cooperate.

The philosophy behind it

Mindfulness isn’t a performance of peace. It’s a relationship with attention. And attention is personal. Contextual. Nervous-system dependent. So I don’t treat mindfulness like a single method everyone must obey. I treat it like a capacity we can build — through stillness or movement — depending on the person.

For some, mindfulness is found in silence. For others, it’s found in rhythm. And in sport, that rhythm is always available: one breath, one step, one stroke at a time.
